Case 4.1: A Rainy Night
It’s 2:30 AM, the rainfall is torrential. The phones of Jericho, Maxwell, and Eddie all ring.
Officer Katz was on the line. The Necromancy Division had contacted her. They had discovered a body in the Dragon District, the victim’s ID had been run, and they had pinged back as being a registered Conduit, which meant that the task force has to take jurisdiction over the case.
The officers arrived at the scene, an empty intersection. They walked up to the taped-off crime scene with the rain still pouring down. After showing their badges to the officer guarding the area, they approached the covered body. Finding Elvar and Tetra of the Necromancy Division examining the body, they saw the approaching officers and greeted them.
The group was brought up to speed by the Viands. two guys, who were being kept to the side waiting to leave a statement, found the body in this spot. The victim still had their wallet and phone on them, so it didn’t seem like a mugging gone wrong. With the officers having no additional questions for the pair, Elvar bid the group good night, as she and Tetra left.
Jericho lifted the cover off of the body. The officers instantly recognised the victim. It was Virgil Mason, the Conduit they had helped months ago with a Quicklin infestation.
Blaine checked Virgil’s body for any clues. He found a work ID for Codac Software. The address of the office was not too far from where they were. Blaine also noticed a pair of puncture wounds on the neck. The officers thought it was a vampire attack but would wait until the autopsy to confirm.
Finding nothing else of importance, the officers moved to the two witnesses, an elf and a dwarf. The dwarf introduced them as Catgut and Gimble. Gimble, the elf, was swaying and having a hard time standing. Catgut said the pair of them had been drinking and that Gimble was wasted, meaning he wouldn’t be much use to them. But the dwarf could tell them they came across Virgil’s body just before 2 AM. They initially thought he was passed out like Gimble was about to. When he got no response from the body, he called the police. The dwarf had seen no one approach the body. He assumed he was already dead by the time they saw him. The officers thanked the two for their co-operation and let them go.
Jericho called the Tech Division to pull any CCTV from the area for the last few hours and see if anything showed. It wasn’t long before he got a call-back. Something had killed all the CCTV feeds for a few minutes between 1:36 and 1:40 AM. The screens just turn to static, and then when they return, Virgil’s body can be seen in the middle of the crossroads. Gilta recommended checking any local establishments to see if they had any cameras on.
