Tomb of Annihilation: 3
Dear Skye,
Our adventures in Chult continue, and the days are starting to blend together with a rhythm that’s both chaotic and exhilarating. The city of Port Nyanzaru has been an explosion of experiences, with the colourful markets, the roar of the dinosaur races, and the fervour of the gladiatorial contests.
We met the famed author, Volothamp Geddarm, who was nursing a hangover at the tavern. He offered us a copy of his latest book, ‘Volo’s Guide to Monsters’, but the price was too steep. De’leon, ever the quick thinker, managed to spirit away a copy with his mage hand while we distracted Volo with a hangover cure. I can’t say I approve of the theft, but the book has already proven invaluable in understanding the creatures we might face in the jungle.
Using Syndra’s funds, we gathered our supplies for the jungle journey. Rain catchers, insect repellents, a canoe, and enough food and water to sustain us for a few days. Our next task was finding a guide, and we settled on a Chultan native, Azaka Stormfang. She agreed to guide us for free, on the condition that we help her retrieve a stolen family heirloom from a nest of pterafolk at Firefinger.
Azaka also knew of Orolunga, the ancient ziggurat we’d been told to seek. It’s home to a wise guardian naga named Saja N’baza, who might be able to guide us further on our quest. She agreed to lead us there after our detour to Firefinger. It feels like we are drawing ever closer to our goal, Skye, and I can’t help but feel a mix of hope and dread.
Towards the end of the day, Angle decided to try his luck at the local dinosaur races and gladiatorial contests to earn some extra coin. His dinosaur, unfortunately, did not win. Undeterred, he signed up for a gladiatorial contest, along with De’leon. They were dressed as pirates for added drama, and I must admit, it was an amusing sight. Dolores stayed nearby to offer healing if needed, while Seki and I watched from the stands.
As I write this, Angle and De’leon are in the coliseum, battling against heavily muscled gladiators. I can hear the roar of the crowd even from here. I pray to Kelemvor that they emerge from this fight unscathed.
I miss you, Skye. Every day, every challenge brings me closer to restoring your rest. I am but a lone monk on a daunting journey, but my resolve is unwavering. You are my strength, my purpose. I will not fail you.
With all my love,
Mugen
